About

Fifty years of looking. Fifty years of painting.

Donna White graduated with BA Hons. Fine Art, and a Higher Education Diploma, from the University of Natal, South Africa in 1976, and has enjoyed a varied and expansive art career.

Her work was exhibited on "Art South Africa Today", an exhibition curated by the legendary critic Clement Greenberg, included in a book on South African art, and in a retrospective exhibition of Photorealism at the Pretoria Art Museum.

Photorealism led the way to experimentation. Through the late 1980s and 1990s her paintings became more fluid and expressive, with bold colours playing a greater part — drawing with paint, exploring texture, and freeing herself from the constraints of photographically exact rendering.

In 2000 Donna and her family relocated to the UK. The rigid constraints of photorealism finally unravelled in an explosion of shape, line, texture and colour. Her work became increasingly abstract — while the discipline of looking, learned in those early years, never left.

More recently her work has been included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the Royal West of England Academy Open Exhibition. She has held numerous solo exhibitions and Open Studio exhibitions, taught and facilitated art, and judged various art competitions.

Over 500 paintings later, her work is held in collections around the world — from Mozambique to Zurich, Vancouver to Hamburg.
